On August 12, 2015, a series of explosions killed 173 people and injured hundreds of others at a container storage station at the Port of Tianjin . The first two explosions occurred within 30 seconds of each other at the facility, which is located in the Binhai New Area of Tianjin , China. The second explosion was far larger and involved the detonation of about 800 tonnes of ammonium nitrate (336 tons TNT equivalent). Fires caused by the initial explosions continued to burn uncontrolled throughout the weekend, resulting in eight additional explosions on 15 August. Of the 173 fatalities, 104 were firefighters.
The cause of the explosions was not immediately known, but an investigation concluded in February 2016 that an overheated container of dry nitrocellulose was the cause of the initial explosion.
The official casualty report was 165 deaths, 8 missing, and 798 non-fatal injuries, but rumours on social media have claimed it was much higher.

There’s a lot of “Oh, we meant to do that. We intend to fail faster...”
But, yeah, the buzz as of this PM is something about “a plumbing problem”. These are not actually new propellants, so yeah, you’d think getting the plumbing safety right would be Job One.
My aerospace background still says they are mis-using the stainless steel in this application, too, but we’ll see how it turns out. They’ve sure blown up a lot of prototypes... “but don’t worry, SN5 will be great!”.
I’m still unclear why they aren’t using an established infrastructure, like NM’s “SpacePort” for this development. Every time I look at the onsite images, it’s like a few guys with cherry pickers on a beach in South Texas. Seems odd to be doing this with no support structure... They’ll soon need blast bunkers and the water-channels cut and built out for exhaust mitigation... also done from scratch.
